Drivers who fail a skills test are prohibited from driving any CMV for a period of time, as determined by the FMCSA and, in some cases, the State agency responsible for issuing CDLs. The FMCSA has the authority to suspend or revoke CDLs for failure to pass a skills test in a vehicle that does not meet the requirements for the license for which the test was taken.
Drivers may be subject to criminal and civil penalties if they violate rules of the road. For example, drivers may be subject to fines, suspension, and imprisonment for illegal operation of a vehicle, failure to maintain log books, and failure to comply with other required safety regulations.
Truck drivers need to be ready, willing, and able to operate trucks and other vehicles, including tractors, trailers, and semitrailers. Drivers are responsible for knowing all the rules of the road and for abiding by those rules. The FMCSA and State agencies may inspect vehicle equipment to determine if a truck meets the requirements of a CDL. The FMCSA may mandate equipment for vehicles that meet certain classifications.
Providing a vehicle that meets the requirements of a CDL is not a guarantee that the applicant will pass the skills test. Drivers must successfully complete the skills test in order to be issued a CDL.
In addition, CDL-issue vehicles must remain in compliance with any and all applicable State laws, rules, and regulations. This includes State laws, rules, and regulations that govern driver hours of service, weight of loads, and hours of operation of vehicles.
CDL holders and all CMV drivers must meet the following qualifications to drive in interstate, intrastate, or foreign commerce:
Class A, B, or C. CDL holders must hold a Class A, B, or C CDL. CDL holders must meet the physical requirements for the class of license they hold and show they have been trained as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. CDL holders must also pass the State knowledge and skills test for the class of license they hold.
Class C. A CDL holder must hold a CDL with the following endorsements: 827ec27edc
