This is the point where we both agree that Memtest86 is indeed a very good and very thorough memory tester. It detects errors in the hardware, but it is a very time-consuming test; its best use is to detect errors that it will not find by standard testing, like ECC memory. Memtest86 will run for days if you have a lot of memory and will not crash until the 4th or 5th pass. With error-correcting RAM installed, it may be worth performing the test only once. If the test does not get to the end, it will let you know what it found. If there are no errors and the machine restarts, then you can be very confident that there is no problem.
It is interesting to note that if you have a piece of memory that you know is bad and you put it into the machine, memtest will detect the error but run until it gets to the end and you will see an error in Memtest86. If you have a bad DIMM, there is no way to detect this.
If you don't have the ISO, but prefer to use the CD, you can download Memtest86 and save it to your file system. The instructions for installing it are on the CD and will run you through the process with the added step of configuring the BIOS settings and saving your changes.
If you don't like using software for testing, but are prepared to do it yourself, then you should download the Memtest86+ option for the ISO. This option will enable you to run the test on your machine and save it to your file system without using any of the disks on the CD. You will need to have the CD for adding the BIOS option, but you can save the results and use them on other machines if necessary.
UPDATE: The latest version of memtest86+ contains several bug-fixes and several settings for popular motherboards. It also features several enhancements like new settings for the AMD64 platform. It is still under development and I will try to make it more complete. The version now available is 7.1.1.1. You can download it from http://www.memtest86.com . Please note that the version number is not the date of the release, but is incremented when I implement new features/settings/etc. The latest version of memtest86+ is quite safe, but you may also want to be careful with the packaged binary as it is not signed.
Please help me, I have contacted Dell and Microsoft about this, and I think they have just brushed me off. I also need to know if Vista 32 bit is compatible with a 64bit processor. I have a Dell PC that was a gift and my friend is a non technical person. 827ec27edc
