It%u2019s a little over two years since Type O Negative released their critically acclaimed, and in some quarters, commercially successful debut album %u2018Saints Of Los Angeles%u2019. Now, boasting a second LP, entitled %u2018Slaves%u2019, the New Jersey-based, Brooklyn-based, or whatever, band have left their punk-rock, thrashy days behind them, and are forging ahead, still on the offensive, but with a greater measure of maturity. (Their live show, and the introduction of their new singer, Bobby Steele, gives the lie to any notion that they%u2019re merely a retro-tinged party band.) Slaves is a more mature, more refined and more comprehensively realised album than their debut, and is not to be sniffed at. True, there are a few naggingly amateurish and overblown moments (see e.g. the heaved-up, operatic solo on %u2018Forever%u2019), but, as with previous efforts, this is quickly forgotten as the band really get on with what they do best. After the claustrophobic, downbeat %u2018Hate This City%u2019, this is a much more familiar, often dark, moody slice of%u201890%u2019s heavy metal, with a fine, snarling vocal performance from Steele. The record is also a lot richer and more diverse than its predecessor, with the band now exploring the full spectrum of their musical interests: the requisite speed metal riffs sit alongside the pop-ish hooks of a good number of songs, such as %u2018Apathy%u2019, and even a cursory listen to %u2018The Great Beyond%u2019 (which seems to have been played live at some point) shows a band who are more than capable of covering both sides of the rock divide. Sadly, the band have been struggling to find a record company willing to take a chance on a new release, and as a result %u2018Slaves%u2019 is ultimately a bit of a let-down; the album doesn%u2019t quite have the impact of its predecessor.%u201CThe thing about Type O Negative is that they%u2019re just a little like a cat that bites you%u2019, and you know you%u2019re in for a good time%u201D and, perhaps, there%u2019s some truth in that.
